How to Plan the Perfect Staycation in the Triangle*

Updated: Aug 21, 2020

With summer in full swing, it’s easy to catch the itch to leave your day-to-life behind and travel beyond your hometown. But when you live in a large area such as the Triangle, North Carolina, there’s so much to take advantage of and explore. Whether you’ve lived in the area your entire life or for just the last few months, there’s plenty of reasons to save money on traveling while practicing safe distancing by planning your very own staycation. And with many stay-at-home orders still in effect, many popular vacation destinations may not be open for quite some time.

The Triangle is the perfect place to stay at home and rediscover the surrounding culture and scenery. There’s plenty to do, no matter if it’s just you and the significant other or the entire family. What are you waiting for? We’re providing all the pieces you need to plan the perfect staycation here in the Triangle.

Experience the Arts & Music in the Triangle

The Triangle is the epicenter of arts and humanities in North Carolina, so if you’ve never taken the time to delve into creativity, now is your chance. Traditional art can be found in larger museums such as the North Carolina Museum of Art (their outdoor sculpture trails are so much fun to walk or ride your bike), but don’t forget about the smaller galleries at Museum 21 Hotel and Art Space’s rotating art exhibits. But paintings and sculptures aren’t the only arts the Triangle has in store.

The Golden Belt district in Durham is another artist incubator that opens its doors various times throughout the month to allow working artists to show off their latest creations. But that’s not the only art happening at the Golden Belt. During the summer months, family-friendly concerts are held outdoors for free. Other local music venues such as the Pinecone Concert Series and Motorco Music Hall offer live music acts from both far and wide.

Head to the Farmer’s Market

Part of the fun of any vacation is enjoying the food that helps you feel comfortable and able to relax. But just because you’re staying home doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy local foods. This is where the local farmer’s markets come in. Stocked full of vendors offering the freshest samples of seasonal fruits and veggies, farmer’s markets such as the Carrboro Farmer’s Market, Durham Farmer’s Market, Cary Farmer’s Market and the North Carolina State Farmer’s Market are the perfect place to encourage your family to eat local while spending an afternoon completely stress-free.

Become One with Nature

If you’re a lover of the outdoors, a nature-focused staycation might be for you. Likely, your busy day-to-day life doesn’t allow much time to explore the great outdoors. Because of this, you may want to focus your extended staycation on exploring the beautiful flowers and trees at the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, Sarah P. Duke Gardens and the Coker Arboretum in Chapel Hill.

Another way to enjoy the outdoors is by heading to the state parks, Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, Eno River State Park and William B. Umstead State Park allow for opportunities to go hiking and camping in your own backyard. For a wildlife education experience head to the Duke Lemur Center and the Carolina Tiger Rescue. Both enable visitors to explore wildlife in their natural habitats.

Playing the tourist in our own town can give us a unique perspective on the places we call home. It gives us a chance to fall in love our hometown all over again. This is undoubtedly true for those living within the Triangle.
